چکیده

Background Evaluation of myocardial fibrosis has been identified as an important part of studying remodeling processes and arrhythmogenesis. While focal fibrosis associated with tissue necrosis is more likely found in those with prior cardiovascular disease (CVD), whether diffuse fibrosis (associated with cellular apoptosis and other pro-fibrotic processes) is also increased is unknown. We used contrast-enhanced CMR to evaluate the association between CVD in MESA over 10-years with myocardial fibrosis measured at year-10.

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance in an adult human population: serial observations from the multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis

The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) is the first large-scale multi-ethnic population study in the U.S. to use advanced cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. MESA participants were free of cardiovascular disease at baseline between 2000 and 2002, and were followed up between 2009 and 2011 with repeated CMR examinations as part of MESA. CMR allows the clinician to visualiz...

Healthy aging of the left ventricle in relationship to cardiovascular risk factors: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)

BACKGROUND Understanding the relationship of cardiovascular structure and function to age is confounded by the high prevalence of traditional risk factors in the United States. The purpose of the study is to compare left ventricular (LV) and aortic structural, and functional parameters in individuals with and without traditional risk factors in a population-based cohort. METHODS AND RESULTS 3...

Aortic valve calcium independently predicts coronary and cardiovascular events in a primary prevention population.

OBJECTIVES This study sought to test whether aortic valve calcium (AVC) is independently associated with coronary and cardiovascular events in a primary-prevention population. BACKGROUND Aortic sclerosis is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality among the elderly, but the mechanisms underlying this association remain controversial. Also, it is unknown whether this as...

Association of SCARB1 variants with subclinical atherosclerosis and incident cardiovascular disease: the multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis.

OBJECTIVE We previously reported a statistically significant association of SCARB1 intronic single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs10846744 with common carotid intimal-medial artery thickness in each of the 4 Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis racial/ethnic groups (white, Chinese, black, and Hispanic). METHODS AND RESULTS Using an expanded sample of 7936 Multi-Ethnic Study of Atheroscleros...

The association between cardiovascular risk and cardiovascular magnetic resonance measures of fibrosis: the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)

BACKGROUND Risk scores for cardiovascular disease (CVD) are in common use to integrate multiple cardiovascular risk factors in order to identify individuals at greatest risk for disease. The purpose of this study was to determine if individuals at greater cardiovascular risk have T1 mapping indices by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) indicative of greater myocardial fibrosis. METHODS C...
